Building alliances in philanthropy – Altruist League

What does it mean to build alliances in philanthropy?

When you begin to grapple with this question, and it is a tough one, it is tempting to go and read the case studies you see on the website of your typical foundation. The stories are all rosy and one-dimensional. The visionary philanthropists saw a group of hard-working but unfortunate women in a far-away place, recognized them as the “affected population,” and then gave them some money. After that, the “beneficiaries” were much better off, and delighted to pose, smiling ear to ear, for the foundation’s brochure.

These stories can be uplifting, but are generic and hide the actual complexity of producing change in the real world. This is why counterexamples might be better ways of learning.
