How to reach Gurez Valley:

The most common way to reach Gurez Valley from Srinagar is by road. Gurez Valley is a beautiful and remote region in the northern part of Jammu and Kashmir, and it’s essential to plan your trip carefully as it involves travelling through sensitive areas. Here’s a general route and information on how to reach Gurez Valley from Srinagar:

  1.   Srinagar to Bandipora : The journey starts from Srinagar, and the first destination is Bandipora. It is approximately 60 kilometres from Srinagar and takes around 1.5 to 2 hours by road, depending on traffic conditions.
  2.   Bandipora to Razdan Pass : From Bandipora, you’ll proceed towards the Razdan Pass. This pass is around 3,000 meters (9,800 feet) above sea level and is the main gateway to Gurez Valley.
  3.   Razdan Pass to Gurez : Once you cross the Razdan Pass, you’ll descend into the stunning Gurez Valley. The journey from the past to Dawar (the main town in Gurez Valley) is about 30 kilometres and takes 1 to 2 hours, depending on road conditions.

Please note that the road from Bandipora to Gurez might be challenging, especially during winter, as it remains closed due to heavy snowfall, making the region inaccessible. Therefore, checking the current road conditions and weather forecasts before planning your trip is crucial.

Additionally, remember that travelling to Gurez Valley may require permits, as it is a restricted area due to its proximity to the Line of Control (LoC), the de facto border between India and Pakistan. It’s advisable to check with local authorities or tour operators regarding the permit requirements before embarking on your journey.

Permit needed to visit Gurez:

For Indian citizens, there is no need for a permit to visit the beautiful Gurez Valley. However, it is mandatory to register at various Army check posts between Srinagar and Dawar during your journey. Presenting your Aadhar Card at these checkpoints is necessary. If you don’t have the physical card, ensure you have a soft copy on your phone as a backup.

On the other hand, for foreign nationals, the earlier practice of obtaining a permit from the District Commissioner’s office in Srinagar or Bandipora to travel to Gurez  is no longer in effect since last year. Currently, only Indian citizens are allowed to enter Gurez , and foreign nationals will not be permitted beyond Bandipora.
