The Evolution of Voice Recognition Technology

The History of Voice Recognition

One of the earliest attempts at voice recognition technology dates back to 1952 when two Bell Laboratories scientists developed an automatic message indicator that could recognize single spoken digits from 0-9. Through the 1950s and 60s, researchers slowly improved the capabilities of speech recognition systems. While these early systems demonstrated the potential of the technology, they were limited to recognizing a small set of isolated words or numbers.

Advancements in Pattern Matching Algorithms

In the 1970s, researchers began developing new pattern matching algorithms that analyzed the acoustic properties and spectral patterns of speech. This allowed systems to recognize continuous speech instead of just isolated words or numbers. A key breakthrough came from Voice Recognition researchers in the late 1970s who developed hidden Markov models to better analyze the transitions between sounds. These statistical pattern recognition techniques helped improve accuracy significantly. Through the 1980s, systems grew more advanced at narrow domains like recognizing digits, dates and zip codes.
