Chorionic Villus Sampling

To find out if your unborn child has a chromosomal or genetic condition like Down syndrome, Edwards syndrome, or Patau syndrome, chorionic villus sampling (CVS) may be recommended to you. The placenta, which connects the mother’s blood supply to the developing baby’s, has a small sample of cells that are removed and examined.

Normally, CVS does not offer services to pregnant women.

You will only be given the option to get this test if there is a high likelihood that your child will be born with a genetic or chromosomal problem.

Despite being performed between the 11th and 14th week of pregnancy, CVS can still be performed later if necessary.
