There are a few main types of discrete capacitors used in electronics design. Knowing the different types helps understand what capacitor is best for various applications. Ceramic Capacitors: Ceramic capacitors are commonly used for bypass and coupling applications where precise values are not critical. They have good stability and can operate over wide temperature ranges. Common dielectric materials include NPO, X7R, and Z5U which offer different tradeoffs in characteristics like capacitance tolerance and temperature stability. Ceramic capacitors are inexpensive and come in small package sizes making them suitable for high density board designs.Film Capacitors: Plastic film Discrete Capacitors have tighter tolerances and better voltage and temperature characteristics than ceramic types. Common dielectric films include polyester (MKS), polypropylene (MKP), and COP which offer increasing levels of performance and stability. Film capacitors are often used for timing, filtering, bypassing, and coupling applications where tighter tolerances are required. They are more expensive than ceramic types.
