Understanding Near Field Communication
What is NFC?Near Field Communication (NFC) refers to a set of communication protocols that enable two electronic devices, like smartphones and tablets, to establish radio communication with each other by touching them together or bringing them into close proximity, usually no more than a few centimeters. NFC operates at 13.56 MHz and can be used for both short-range communication between devices, as well as for contactless transactions.
How Does NFC Work?
An Near Field Communication chip contains an antenna to receive and transmit signals. When an NFC enabled device comes within proximity of a reader or another NFC device, both activate their antennas to begin two-way communication. NFC uses magnetic field induction, where two loop antennas located close to each other couple and transfer information due to electromagnetic induction between the antennas. This allows the devices to read the information contained on tags and other NFC chips. The communication occurs for a few seconds before the devices disconnect.
