Why Does Everyone Ghost on Dating Apps?

Lately, it feels like ghosting has become one of the biggest frustrations in online dating.

You match with someone, exchange a few messages, and just when the conversation seems to be going well… they disappear. No explanation, no goodbye, just silence.

I’m curious—why do you think this happens so often?

Do people lose interest quickly, get distracted by new matches, or is it simply because there are too many conversations happening at once?

A few things have helped me improve my response rate:

  • I stopped opening with just “Hey.”
  • I started asking questions based on something in the other person’s profile.
  • I kept my messages short and easy to reply to.
  • I stopped sending multiple follow-up messages if someone hadn’t replied.

I also realized that the platform itself can make a difference. Some apps seem to encourage endless swiping more than actual conversations. I’ve recently been trying Flircy (full disclosure, I’m a bit biased). It’s browser-based, lets you browse by city and shared interests, and is designed to encourage real conversations rather than just collecting matches.
