Why Flared Terminal Openings Prevent Weak Crimps
The flared opening on both the insulation and conductor tube of a pre-insulated terminal isn’t cosmetic — it guides stray wire strands inward during insertion rather than letting them snag and fold back, which is a common cause of weak, high-resistance crimps that fail later under load. Tin-plated copper does the real electrical work: copper for conductivity, tin plating to resist oxidation at the contact surface, since oxidized copper raises resistance even when the crimp is mechanically fine.
