Stem Cell Treatment for Optic Nerve Damage

There is no established treatment available for LHON. In a few cases, the central vision gradually improved; however, in most cases, the vision loss is profound and permanent.

Stem cells being smart cells of the body have the ability to regenerate nerve cells in the optic region, allowing eye patients to recover some vision. The stem cell therapy procedure for eye disease includes a collection of tissue from the patient, isolation of stem cells, and injection of back stem cells to patients at the retrobulbar site.
