In order to comply with Alaska law, lights must be easily identifiable, sized and maintained on a regular basis.   Exit light

  Emergency and exit lighting buildings must have clear exit signs that are easily found from a distance as this is critical in an emergency. The sign must be illuminated from an external or internal light source. The Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) requires externally powered lights to be lit to 5 foot candles or 54 lux, while self-illuminating lighting must be at least .06 feet – Lambert. Although there is no color requirement, the logo must be visible even under normal conditions, and the “exit” letter should be at least 6 inches high and 3/4 inches wide.

  2. Emergency light

  Although many types of emergency lights are available, they must be ready to illuminate immediately or within 10 seconds of a power outage. After that, the lights must remain energized for at least 90 minutes. These lights must be placed on emergency exits and on any route leading to these doors, including stairwells, corridors, escalators and ramps.

  3. Task light

  For focus emergency and exit lighting, consider installing a task light. They are designed to provide enhanced visibility for specific purposes in the event of a problem. For example, they can help you read the instructions on the safety device, use a fire alarm or fire extinguisher in a dark corridor, or brighten a natural dim place to make it safer to leave the building.
