Oiled Floor Cleaning

Oiled Floor Cleaning

Oiled wood floors offer a rich, natural look and a durable finish that ages beautifully. However, they require a specific cleaning routine to maintain their luster and protect the oil finish. Unlike traditional sealed wood floors, oiled floors need regular nourishment to prevent drying and cracking.

Daily cleaning involves sweeping or vacuuming with a soft floor brush attachment to remove dust and debris. This prevents grit from scratching the surface and dulling the finish.

For deeper cleaning, use a cleaner specifically designed for oiled wood floors. Avoid harsh chemicals, soaps, or abrasive cleaners, as these can strip the oil and damage the wood. Instead, choose a pH-neutral cleaner that is compatible with oil finishes.

When cleaning, dilute the cleaner according to the manufacturer’s instructions and apply it using a slightly damp mop or microfiber cloth. Avoid soaking the floor, as excess water can penetrate the wood and cause damage. Work in small sections, wringing out the mop frequently to ensure it is only slightly damp.

Periodically, oiled floors need to be re-oiled to replenish the protective layer and maintain their sheen. Depending on the type of oil and the level of traffic, this may be necessary every few months to a year. Use a high-quality oil specifically designed for wood floors and apply it according to the manufacturer’s instructions.

Spills should be wiped up immediately to prevent staining. For stubborn marks, use a slightly damp cloth and the recommended cleaner for your oiled floor. Avoid harsh scrubbing motions that can damage the surface.

Protective measures like felt pads under furniture legs and mats at entrances can help prevent scratches and reduce wear and tear. Avoid dragging heavy objects across the floor, and be mindful of high heels which can cause indentations
