Travertine, a beautiful natural stone reminiscent of ancient Roman architecture, lends an air of elegance to any space. However, its porous nature and unique texture demand specific cleaning techniques to maintain its beauty and longevity.  

Regular cleaning starts with gentle dry dusting using a soft broom or vacuum with a floor brush attachment. This removes loose dirt and debris that can scratch the surface. Avoid using harsh cleaning tools like scouring pads or stiff brushes.  

For deeper cleaning, opt for a pH-neutral cleaner specifically designed for natural stone. Harsh chemicals can etch and dull the surface of travertine. Dilute the cleaner according to the manufacturer’s instructions and apply it using a soft mop or microfiber cloth. Work in small sections, rinsing the mop frequently with clean water to prevent dirt from spreading.  

Travertine is highly susceptible to staining, especially from acidic substances like wine or citrus juices. Promptly blot spills to prevent them from penetrating the stone. For stubborn stains, consider using a poultice. A paste of baking soda and water, or a specialized poultice for travertine, can be applied to the stain, covered with plastic wrap, and left for 24-48 hours to draw it out.  

Sealing is crucial to protect travertine floors. A high-quality sealer helps fill the pores, creating a barrier against stains and spills. Depending on the type of sealer and the amount of foot traffic, resealing may be necessary every one to three years.
